HEdway Adapted Double Diamond
Delivery method
The HEdway framework for delivering people centred change:
- Always start with people
- Co-diagnose the problems
- Co-create the solutions
Tailor the approach to the nature of the problems and opportunities; choose tools purposefully to match the need.
The method in text
- Overarching double diamond framework: the Problem diamond opens with Discover and narrows through Define; the Solution diamond opens with Develop and narrows through Deliver.
- Match the delivery approach to the nature of the problem.
- Know what each tool is good for, and apply it purposefully.
- Manage lightly whenever possible, adding to it if needed.
Matching approach to problem
Naturally complex problems (no single right answer)
In the Problem diamond: a Systems Thinking approach, with tools such as Rich Pictures, the Iceberg model, Stocks and Flows, and Causal Loop Diagrams, managed with Project Light or Agile. In the Solution diamond: a Design Thinking approach, with tools such as Personas, Journey Maps, Empathy Maps, "How might we" questions, Prototyping and Pilots, managed with OGSM or MSP. Example applications: operating models, service architecture, policy development, culture change, and new digital services.
Artificially complex problems (solvable with the right tools)
In the Problem diamond: a Continuous Improvement (DMA) approach, with tools such as Voice of the Customer, SIPOC, process maps, the wastes, value-added analysis, 5 Whys and waste measurement, managed with Project Light or Agile. In the Solution diamond: a Continuous Improvement (IC) approach, with tools such as SECAR, One Best Way, FMEA, 5S, skills matrices, visual management and QCD, managed with PDCA or Agile. Example applications: process, data, operational and systems improvement, and existing digital services.
